□ Series: Free! Iwatobi Swim Club
□ Canon point: End of anime
□ History: Aiichiro has been swimming for a long time. He entered tournaments in elementary school, and was actually involved in the same tournament where Rin swam in a relay with Haru, Makoto, and Nagisa. While Aiichiro’s team in that tournament lost in the preliminaries, that tournament stuck with him because he was deeply moved by the performance of Rin’s team. Even though this was before he actually knew any of the boys, it was because of this tournament that he would later remember the names of Rin’s friends after they became the Iwatobi swim club.
In high school, Aiichiro found himself caught up in his roommate Rin’s drama. They were often together, considering they were both roommates and members of the same sports team. Aiichiro admired his roommate quite a bit, and did everything he could to help him during what was a difficult time for the older boy. Besides practicing together, he was always trying to figure out what was going on with Rin’s problems with his former team, and doing his best to be supportive.
Aiichiro himself competed in freestyle at tournaments, but he wasn’t able to choose the race that he wanted to be in. He very much wanted to swim in the 100 meter freestyle race, but despite training and desire, wasn’t able to do so. Ironically, this was the exact same race that Rin himself bombed out on after choosing to compete in both freestyle and the relay race.
His failure to succeed in the area he wanted didn’t mean that Aiichiro wasn’t swimming at all, however. In fact, he was placed in a longer race because of his stamina, which Rin pointed out to him was his strong suit. This praise from his senpai helped to cheer Aiichiro up when he was feeling negatively about his own progress, which he felt wasn’t enough because he lacked the kind of natural talent that others had.
When the situation between the Iwatobi team and Rin finally exploded during the regional tournament, Aiichiro was right in the middle of the situation again. He chased down his very upset roommate after Rin botched his individual race and got removed from the relay team, and continued to be supportive even when Rin was yelling at him and striking out against inanimate objects in the area. When the tournament was over and Rin came back to the Samezuka team after having illegally joined the race with the Iwatobi team, Aiichiro was seen instantly accepting his apology and being excited to see him.
□ Personality: Aiichiro is a very expressive boy. He’s quick to offer opinions and advice even to those that he looks up to, and doesn’t hold back his feelings or thoughts. He laughs, cries, smiles, and yells with equal fervor, and never gives up when it comes to helping those he cares about. He also has a very active imagination, which can sometimes spill over into being a little too expressive. For instance, when Rin tells him that he’s going to see his father, Aiichiro manages to imagine that his roommate is going to die to do so, perhaps by committing suicide. His caring about others leads him to worry too much, which can sometimes lead to such outbursts.
Aside from expressing himself in such a manner personally, he also keeps a diary for his important thoughts, much of which also has to do with his roommate, from marveling over his English to wondering what to get him for Christmas. In fact, Aiichiro’s observations in his diary show that he’s a very perceptive person, which also is made apparent when it comes to things like remembering the names of rival team members because of a tournament that happened years ago.
While he doesn’t necessarily think much of his own swimming skill, he is a very dedicated member of the Samezuka team. He works hard in training - and indeed writes in his diary that he wants to train harder - but that’s not the limit of his involvement. He wants to help everyone around him reach their full potential as well, and continually encourages Rin and praises him when his times improve, even when Rin himself doesn’t see those small victories as enough.
When it comes to dealing with others, being outgoing, friendly, and supportive just comes natural to Aiichiro. He’s always very quick to start a conversation, even if he isn’t always careful enough about what he’s saying. He gets lonely quickly when left on his own, but he’s also not the type to blame anyone for that, and in fact mentions in his diary how happy for Rin he is once his roommate has made up with his old friends. While Aiichiro doesn’t want to be left behind, he’s always more concerned with the wellbeing of others than his own desires. This is shown best during the moment at regionals when Rin is yelling at him. Even though Aiichiro is standing there facing down an older boy who is behaving violently, the concern he voices is that Rin may get in trouble and not be allowed to swim anymore, not that he himself might be injured or that his feelings are hurt by Rin’s behavior.
It becomes obvious that his admiration towards his senpai isn’t the only thing on Aiichiro’s mind, though. His own interest in swimming and in his studies becomes clear through his diary entries and his conversations with Rin, and he’s also friendly toward his other teammates. His desire to make sure Rin reaches his full potential and his stalker-ish behavior toward the older boy are just one facet of his personality, and he shows interest in talking to others and getting to know them as well.
□ Age: 16 (Jan 4, here for my own reference)
□ Gender: Male
□ Appearance: The only thing particularly distinct about Aiichiro’s appearance is how uncool he is. His gray-ish hair is cut rather funnily, something of a bowl shape but uneven at that. He has a beauty mark under one eye, is small for his age, and generally looks like that little nerd who probably gets stuffed into lockers in school. He’s thin, but does have some strength and tone to him from swimming. His clothing tends to be very casual: shorts, t-shirts, gym clothes. He wears a purple and yellow bathing suit, and most of his other clothing that isn’t school-colors is also bright or pastel.
His movements are always very animated. If Aiichiro has a thought, it will be on his face, in his posture, in this tone of voice. There isn’t a stoic bone in his body, and anyone looking at him can tell that.
□ Abilities/Powers: Physically, Aiichiro is rather small, which can be a weakness in itself. He does have good stamina, but he’s not the strongest or fastest person, either on land or in water. Of course, his stamina and swimming skill might be of use if he’s ever in danger of drowning! Aside from that, he’s a fairly normal teenaged boy, not particularly excelling at any one thing that would set him apart.
His biggest personal strengths are his outgoing nature and his perceptiveness. He’s good at dealing with people, as evidenced by the fact that even though his rather surly roommate often gets angry with him, Aiichiro is able to bounce back quickly and keep being his friend. Being in a strange place with new people is something Aiichiro would handle well, since he is able to strike up conversations easily. Being perceptive can be a major bonus both in terms of noticing what is around him and feeling situations, but also in getting to know people.
He has no magic powers or superhuman abilities, unless one chooses to count cuteness.
□ Personal Items: His gym bag, which holds a spare bathing suit, goggles, the book he was reading, his diary, a towel, basic toiletries.
